DESIGN AND PURPOSE

LMI-1 is one of three prototype Universal Homes™ designed for community revitalization. The LMI-1 home was the first earth home constructed in Abilene for Low to Moderate Income (LMI) applications and the second prototype using a Lime stabilized Interior/ Exterior Compressed Earth Block (CEB) Wall System.

The LMI-1 prototype was the last home produced consisting of both interior and exterior CEB’s. Exterior Wall system performed as previously observed, producing superior thermal shielding from solar heat gain, comparable to being 10-foot underground, however heat produced within the interior envelope of the building substantially contributed to interior heat loading requiring mitigation.

Note:

Maintaining a ceiling height of 9 foot 4 inches in future LMI homes would elevate mitigation for interior heat production. Central HVAC systems would not be required with the use of inline ventilation system. As with HUD-2 & 3, interior CEB wall system increases construction cost without contributing any performance attributes.
